Mixed Insulin 3 ml.  1 pen.  Sold by Shwe Myittar Pharmacy.

Composition and Indication

NovoRapid is used to treat diabetes in adults and children. It contains a rapid acting insulin aspart. Each milliliter of Novorapid has 100 units of insulin aspart. FlexPen is an insulin pen that comes pre-filled and allows for easy selection of insulin doses. It has a dial-a-dose feature, enabling users to administer NovoRapid insulin in increments of 1 unit, ranging from 1 to 60 units. One flexpen contains 3 milliliters which is equal to 300 units of insulin aspart.

Dosage and Precautions

NovoRapid  is a rapid-acting insulin that works to lower blood sugar levels when injected. Its onset of action is faster than soluble human insulin when injected under the skin. Typically, NovoRapid starts to take effect within 10 to 20 minutes after injection. The maximum impact is usually experienced between 1 to 3 hours after injection, and its effects can last for up to 5 hours. NovoRapid carries a lower risk of causing nocturnal hypoglycemic episodes due to its shorter duration of action.

Pay attention to special warnings and precautions, including the risks of hypoglycemia (low blood sugar), hyperglycemia (high blood sugar), skin and subcutaneous tissue disorders, kidney and liver diseases and potential interactions with other medications.

Undesirable Effects and Drug Interactions

While using NovoRapid, you may experience certain side effects. These can include hypoglycemia (low blood sugar), vision problems, skin changes at injection sites, signs of allergy (redness, swelling, itching), peripheral neuropathy (pain due to nerve damage), and swollen joints.

It's important to be aware of the potential for interactions with other medications. Other oral antidiabetic medications, MAOI, beta blockers, ACEI, acetylsalicylic acid, anabolic steroids, and sulphonamides may cause hypoglycemia (low blood sugar), whereas oral contraceptives, thiazides, glucocorticoids, thyroid hormone therapy, sympathomimetics, growth hormone, and danazol may cause hyperglycemia (high blood sugar). Octreotide and lanreotide may either increase or decrease blood sugar level. Beta-blockers can potentially diminish or completely mask the initial warning signs that help you recognize low blood sugar levels.

In some cases, patients with long-standing diabetes and heart disease or a previous stroke may develop heart failure when pioglitazone is combined with insulin. If you experience symptoms like unusual shortness of breath, rapid weight gain, or localized swelling (edema), it is crucial to inform your doctor promptly.

Storage

For unused NovoRapid FlexPen, store them in a refrigerator between 2°C and 8°C, ensuring they are not placed in or too close to the freezer section or cooling element.

NovoRapid FlexPen that is being used or carried as a spare should be stored below 30°C or in a refrigerator between 2°C and 8°C. It can be used for up to 4 weeks. Remember to discard the NovoRapid FlexPen after 4 weeks, even if there is some insulin remaining.

Make sure the NovoRapid in the NovoRapid FlexPen does not freeze or come into contact with excessive heat or light. To protect it from light, always keep the pen cap on when the pen is not in use.

Alternatives

Currently, there are no alternative medications available in Myanmar that contain the insulin aspart.
