Composition and Indication

Ryzodeg is an insulin medication used to treat diabetes. It contains two types of insulin: basal insulin degludec and rapid-acting prandial insulin aspart. Each milliliter of Ryzodeg solution has 100 units of insulin degludec/insulin aspart in a 70/30 ratio. This medication is suitable for adults, adolescents, and children aged 2 years and older who have diabetes mellitus.

Dosage and Precautions

For patients with type 2 diabetes, the starting dose of Ryzodeg is typically 10 units with meals. Your doctor will adjust the dosage based on your individual needs. For patients with type 1 diabetes, the recommended starting dose is 60-70% of your total daily insulin requirements. Ryzodeg should be used once daily at mealtime, alongside short- or rapid-acting insulin for your other meals. Pay attention to special warnings and precautions, including the risks of hypoglycemia (low blood sugar), hyperglycemia (high blood sugar), skin and subcutaneous tissue disorders, and potential interactions with other medications.

Undesirable Effects and Drug Interactions

While using Ryzodeg, you may experience certain side effects. These can include hypoglycemia (low blood sugar), hypersensitivity reactions, urticaria (rash),  injection site reactions, and peripheral edema (swelling). It's important to be aware of the potential for interactions with other medications. Some substances may reduce the insulin requirement, such as certain oral antidiabetic medications, GLP-1 receptor agonists, beta-blockers, and more. On the other hand, substances like oral contraceptives, thiazides, and glucocorticoids may increase the insulin requirement. Beta-blockers can mask the symptoms of low blood sugar, and octreotide/lanreotide may affect insulin requirements. Also, alcohol can affect the effectiveness of insulin.

Storage

To ensure the potency of Ryzodeg, store the pre-filled pen in a refrigerator between 2°C and 8°C. Avoid freezing the medication and keep it away from the freezing element. Always keep the cap on the pen to protect it from light.

Alternatives

Currently, there are no alternative medications available in Myanmar that contain the same combination of insulin degludec and insulin aspart.
